Vi scrivo per la relazione che dobbiamo fare per l'incontro a Berlino sulle Migrazioni nei Musei. Come sapete questo incontro si terra dal 23 al 25 ottobre in diverse sedi di musei di Berlino. Noi dobbiamo creare una presentazione dei lavori artistici e di divulgazione che sono stati prodotti dalla rete G2 e come questo può essere un esempio di rappresentazione da tenere conto nelle collezioni e mostre contemporanee che si mostrano nei musei. Vi allego (in inglese) l'application che avevamo inviato, cosi come i dettagli dell'incontro.
Avevo pensato ad una presentazione powerpoint, con immagini dei video, del sito, del CD e del fotoromanzo. Vorrei anche portare i video fatti, da Mariana, quello sulla radio e quelli di prima, e magari anche il CD.
Credo sia importante incontrarci per mettere insieme il materiale e pianificare l'intervento, perché si deve tradurre tutto al inglese. Per favore fatemi sapere quando ci possiamo incontare, in settimana o la prossima. Io sarò a Ravenna l'otto e il nove per una mostra ma di resto ho tutto il tempo a disposizione.

(Second Generation Network) Italy

When speaking about diversity or its representation, we believe as a second generation migrants' network, in self-representation and in working with our own cultural resources (there are many artists within our group), with the communities, and the "story holders". The work of artists goes beyond representation and the production of visual items. Rather, it has to do with cultural mediation, and the transfer of tools to others, by sharing skills and facilitating processes that allow the community and subjects to speak out and tell our own history, needs and wishes. By promoting direct participation of the children of migrants in the narration of stories, and the recovery of memory, museums can contribute to a closer, trustworthier image of migration's past, present and future. By doing so, immigrants feel included, integration is promoted and society encouraged to accept and celebrate cultural diversity.

Rete G2 – Seconde Generazioni is a national organization of sons and daughters of migrants and refugees born and/or grown in Italy. Those who belong to the network define themselves as "sons and daughters of immigrants" and not as "immigrants".G2 does not stand for "second generation of migrants", but rather as "second generation of migration", indenting migration as a process that is changing Italy, generation by generation.
Rete G2 is a network of "citizens of the world", from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe working together on two main issues: denied rights to second generation without Italian citizenship and identity as encounter among cultures.
G2 was set up in Rome, in 2005 and consists of second generations from other Italian cities (Milan, Prato, Genoa, Mantua, Arezzo, Padova, Imola, Bologna, Bergamo and Ferrara) that participate in national Workshops organized by Rete G2 every year. G2 has also a virtual meeting place , Blog G2

https://www.secondegenerazioni.it/forum) where as many as 350 users are registered.
Video G2 audiovisuals were produced in 2006. The first one was awarded the Mostafà Souhir national prize while the Ministry of Welfare commissioned an audiovisual spot to the network based on its second video "G2: Forte e Chiaro" ("G2: Loud and Clear") produced in collaboration with Ecuadorian artist Maria Rosa Jijòn. In 2007 Rete G2 joined the Advisory Boards of the Ministry of Welfare for "issues related to migrant foreigners and their families", and of the "Observatory on Integration of foreign students and intercultural education" in the Municipality of Rome. Moreover, G2 collaborates with the Intercultural Center of the Province of Mantua and with the Assessorate for Education of the Municipality of Rome. In 2007 G2 has developed and produced an original communication tool: Fotoromanzo G2 (Photonovel G2) to promote an amendment to the current legislation on Italian citizenship (law n.91, 1992), to include migrants' children born and/or educated in Italy. In November 2007 a G2 delegation handed in a copy of Fotoromanzo and a letter to the President of the republic Giorgio Napolitano. The President welcomed the G2 appeal stating that "current legislation is too restrictive, we need to open up new channels of access to citizenship for to many children and young people sons and daughters of immigrants".
In 2008 Rete G2 has developed and directed the radio program "OndeG2" on wave as of February 15 on Radio Popolare Milano and at the national level on Popolare Network and promoted the CD (Straniero a chi? Tracce e parole dei figli dell'immigrazione" ("Foreigner to whom? Traces and words of children of immigration") in collaboration with the Ministry of Welfare and the recording company "Gridalo forte records"
G2 mission is as follows:- reform of the Italian citizenship law to be more open to be more open to second generations. Access to citizenship is the only way to allow immigrant children to be considered as peers, equals, in rights and duties to children of Italians of the same age
- cultural transformation of Italian society to be more aware and to welcome all its sons and daughters independently of their origin;
G2 methodology is that of direct representation, with no intermediaries in a direct dialogue with institutions. G2 carries out a collective analysis of the Italian context rather than a simple witnessing of single stories of migrant children. It has a cross-cutting approach to party politics, it uses the tools of politics but has no party affiliation.
Maria Rosa Jijon _ visual artist _ migrants' rights activist
rosajijon@gmail.comMaria RosaJijon is an Ecuadorian artist working with photo, video, sound and public interventions. She did her studies in Ecuador, Cuba and Sweden.
Jijon's work deals with the idea of being a foreigner and with human mobility in migratory contexts, hence it is based on mutual exchange and collaboration with grassroots groups and local migrant organizations. She is a member of Rete G2, and coordinates audio visual production for a project in Ecuador regarding street gangs' transformation
process with FLACSO (Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales _ Quito). She is also a trainer and teacher with MUS-E a European Artistic Project, aimed at introducing art in elementary schools as a way to fight against violence. She has attended various workshops on social and urban intervention with Michelangelo Pistoletto's Cittadellarte Foundation, and is presently a member of El Puente artistic collective, based in Medellin, Colombia and five European cities. Jijon has also taken part in a series of filmmaking projects regarding foreign communities in Italy.

Dear Mrs. Jijon,
We are pleased to confirm on behalf of the selection committee that your proposal for the conference "Migration in Museums: Narratives of Diversity in Europe" (October 25-27, 2008, Berlin) has been accepted. The call for papers had a very good response; we received a total of 120 applications.
We would like to ask you to confirm your participation as soon as possible, but no later than July 15 so that we can start the more concrete planning process for the conference. Please return the attached confirmation sheet by then. Please email (
migration.museums@web.de) or fax (0049/30/83228236) the sheet back as soon as possible. If we do not hear from you by July 15, we will replace your contribution with an alternate from our list of substitute participants.
We will provide you with further logistical information (accommodation, location, conference program, workshop format, your presentation, etc.) in the second half of July, but here some initial information:
- The conference will start on Thursday, October 23 at 11 AM and end on Saturday, October 25 in the evening with a public keynote lecture by Saskia Sassen (Columbia University). Prof. Sassen's talk on "Migrants Moving Memory/History" will take place in Berlin's Jewish Museum. There will be about 80-90 conference participants from Thursday to Saturday.
- Lunch and dinner during the days of the conference will be arranged and paid for by the conference organizers.
- We are able to offer travel subsidies. If you would like to apply for one, please let us know your expected date of arrival and departure, so that we can book a ticket for you (see attached confirmation sheet). Participants are, however, encouraged to apply for travel funds at their home institutions. Saving on travel expenses offers us the opportunity to invite some more applicants from our rather long lists of reserve candidates.
- Costs for accommodation need to be covered by participants themselves. We have blocked a group of rooms in various hotels (€ 80-100/night) where you will be able to book a room from mid-July. We will let you know the details after July 15.

Heike Bungert
Heike Bungert is an assistant professor at the University of Cologne and currently substituting for Dirk Hoerder as the professor for North American History at the University of Bremen. She earned her M.A. at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, her Ph.D. at the University of Tuebingen, and her habilitation (second dissertation) at the University of Cologne. Her research has focused on U.S.-German political and cultural relations and on ethnic history (German Americans, African Americans, American Indians). She published a book on the perception of Germany and the USSR by the Western Allies (Das Nationalkomitee und der Westen: Das NKFD und die Freien Deutschen Bewegungen aus der Sicht der Westalliierten, 1934-1948. Stuttgart: Steiner, 1997) and has completed the manuscript of a study on the festive culture of German migrants to the United States ("Feste und das ethnische Gedächtnis: Die Festkultur der Deutschamerikaner im Spannungsfeld zwischen deutscher und amerikanischer Identität, 1848-1914"). Currently she is interested in the construction of identity of American Indians.
